The combination of low-cost cellphones and open-source software enable the possibility of cellphone-based electronic data capture for health research in several settings. We used a web based interface to design an electronic survey that was delivered as an electronic questionnaire to low-cost basic cellphones. Using this cellphone application, research staff could collect high quality, real-time data that could be used for immediate analysis. In this paper, we discuss the architecture of such an electronic data capture system and provide a step-by-step primer for setting up a feasible system.
